The Canonica a Cerreto estate is located in Chianti Classico heartland, more specifically in the Castlenuovo Berarddenga subzone in the south of the Chianti Classico region.  Widely considered one of the best subzones, so much so that importers used to ask wineries to highlight that name of the label, the wines from this southern area have a greater emphasis on fruit flavours.

At various stages over the centuries the estate has been a monetary, a farm and a holiday villa for the local bishop.  In the early 1970's the estate along with its vineyards and olive tree orchards were purchased by its current owners, the Lorenzi family.
