Aglianico is the main red grape grown in the Campania region, its most famous expression is in the Taurasi of the mountains near Avellino and the Aglianico del Vulture of Basilicata.  Both of these wines are from the mountains and as such are heavier, darker and contain the acidity and tannins that are required for a wine of longevity.

This Aglianico comes from the coast west of Naples and the cooling nature of the sea produces a much more accessible easy drinking wine.  Generally softer in all aspects it still has the smokey, dark cherry, tobacco flavours that you associate with Aglianico.
